Overview
The Maldives is an archipelago of 1,200 coral islands scattered across 90,000 square kilometres of the Indian Ocean. The average land height above sea level is 1.5 metres — making it the world's lowest-lying country and one of the most climate-vulnerable nations on Earth. What it offers in exchange for this precariousness is incomparable: water so clear you can see every grain of sand 10 metres below; reefs teeming with manta rays, whale sharks, sea turtles, and a thousand species of fish; and a silence broken only by waves.
The iconic Maldives experience is the overwater villa — a private cabin perched on stilts above the lagoon, with a glass floor panel revealing reef below, a direct staircase into the water, and sunsets that turn the Indian Ocean copper and gold every evening without fail. This is not a budget destination: the resort island model means that prices for accommodation, food, and excursions are bundled and high. But Maldives guest houses on local islands offer the same extraordinary ocean access for a fraction of the cost.
Snorkelling and diving here are world-class at any ability level. Night-snorkelling reveals bioluminescent plankton that makes the water glow electric blue. The Maldives is also the world's best destination to snorkel with whale sharks — the world's largest fish — which gather predictably off certain reefs throughout the year.

Most Maldives resort islands sit directly on a coral reef accessible from the beach — your "house reef" for snorkelling without a boat. At dusk, nurse sharks patrol the shallows. PADI dive courses are available at every resort and many guesthouses. The Maldives has some of the world's most reliably clear water — 30m+ visibility is normal.
The South Ari Atoll is home to the Maldives' most reliable whale shark population — the world's biggest fish, up to 12 metres long, filter-feeding harmlessly on plankton. Swimming alongside one is a bucket-list experience available year-round. Manta rays are seasonal but spectacular — Hanifaru Bay is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the planet's top manta aggregation sites.
Many Maldives resorts and guesthouses offer excursions to uninhabited sandbanks — tiny white crescents that emerge from the turquoise lagoon at low tide. A boat drops you off with a picnic hamper and snorkelling gear for two or three hours of complete solitude. It is the closest most humans will ever come to a deserted tropical island.
Plan Your Trip
The northeast monsoon brings clear skies, calm seas, and maximum visibility for diving and snorkelling. Christmas and New Year are peak season with peak prices — book 6–12 months ahead for overwater villas.
The transition month before the wet monsoon. Weather is still reasonable with good diving visibility. Prices begin to drop significantly. Manta rays begin appearing in the northern atolls.
Southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas, but it rarely rains all day — mornings are often fine. Resort prices drop 30–50%. Whale sharks are year-round in South Ari Atoll and often easier to see in the wet season.
Transition back to the dry season. October can still be wet but November sees rapidly improving weather. Good prices before the high-season rush. Bioluminescent plankton blooms are spectacular this time of year.
Practical Info
All nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival, extendable for an additional 60 days from within the country. You need an onward or return ticket and accommodation confirmation at check-in.
Velana International Airport (MLE) on Malé is the hub. From there, resorts and guesthouses are reached by speedboat (15–90 min) or seaplane (the iconic Maldivian experience, ~$600 return). Budget guesthouses on local islands are often reached by public ferry or cheaper speedboat.
Local island guesthouses: $80–200/night, with access to snorkelling and a genuine cultural experience. Mid-range resort: $300–800/night (usually all-inclusive). Luxury overwater villa: $800–5,000+/night. The Maldives is genuinely expensive but guesthouses offer remarkable value for the environment.
Local island food is centred on tuna — grilled, smoked, or in mas huni (shredded tuna with coconut). Resorts serve international cuisine. The Maldives is an Islamic republic: alcohol is only available at licensed resort islands, not on local islands. Budget $5–15 per meal at local island cafes.
Most guesthouses offer house reef snorkelling free of charge. Dive trips run $60–100/dive at most operators. PADI open water courses are available across all experience levels. Best dive sites require a dhoni (traditional boat) and guide — book through your accommodation.
On local islands, modest dress is required outside of the beach area (covered shoulders and knees). Bikinis are for the beach and designated "bikini beaches" only. Alcohol is prohibited on local islands — a genuine contrast to resort islands. The Maldivian people are exceptionally welcoming to respectful visitors.
