Overview

About New York City

New York City is the world in miniature. Over 8 million people from every nation, religion, and background call this city home, making it arguably the most culturally diverse urban place on Earth. Founded by Dutch colonists as New Amsterdam in 1626, it became the first capital of the United States in 1789 and has been a beacon for immigrants, dreamers, and strivers ever since. The Statue of Liberty — a gift from France in 1886 — still stands in the harbour as the world's most recognisable symbol of freedom and opportunity.

Manhattan's grid of avenues and streets organises a borough of extraordinary density and ambition: the glass and steel canyons of Midtown, the old money elegance of the Upper East Side, the literary cafés of Greenwich Village, the hipster markets of Brooklyn's Williamsburg, the West Indian culture of Crown Heights, the jazz heritage of Harlem. Each neighbourhood tells a different chapter of the American story.

NYC's cultural institutions are among the world's finest — MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim, Carnegie Hall, Broadway's 41 theatres. Its food scene is unmatched: a $1 bodega coffee at sunrise, a Katz's pastrami sandwich for lunch, dim sum in Flushing's Queens Chinatown, and a $400 tasting menu dinner are all equally defining New York experiences. The city rewards curiosity at every budget level.

Top Attractions

Iconic landmarks and hidden neighbourhoods make NYC an endlessly explorable world city.

Statue of Liberty
Landmark★ 4.8

Statue of Liberty

Standing 93 metres tall on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, Lady Liberty has welcomed arriving ships since 1886. The statue was a gift from France, designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an iron framework by Gustave Eiffel. Take the ferry from Battery Park, and if possible book the pedestal or crown tour in advance for views across the harbour. Ellis Island next door tells the immigration story that built modern America.

Central Park New York
Park★ 4.9

Central Park

843 acres of urban oasis in the heart of Manhattan, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and opened in 1858. Walk the Reservoir, rent a rowboat on the Lake, watch the Bethesda Fountain, catch a free Shakespeare in the Park performance, or simply spread out on Sheep Meadow with a book. In winter, ice skate at Wollman Rink with the skyline as your backdrop.

Empire State Building
Skyscraper★ 4.7

Empire State Building

The Art Deco masterpiece completed in 1931 held the title of world's tallest building for 40 years. Its 86th-floor open-air observation deck offers 360-degree views of all five boroughs, New Jersey, Connecticut, and on a clear day up to 130 km. The building's LED lights change colour nightly to mark holidays and events. Book skip-the-line tickets online to avoid the often-90-minute queues.

New York is a year-round destination — each season offers a completely different city experience.

🌸

Spring (Apr–May)

Best Season10–22 °C

Cherry blossoms in Central Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, mild temperatures, and the city shaking off winter. April and May are the sweet spot before summer heat and crowds.

☀️

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Peak Season22–32 °C

Hot and humid but electric: outdoor concerts, SummerStage, free movies in Bryant Park, July 4th fireworks, rooftop bars, and beach days in the Rockaways. Book ahead — hotels fill fast.

Many New Yorkers call this the best season: crisp air, Central Park's foliage, the New York Film Festival, and the Marathon in November. Shoulder season means slightly lower hotel rates.

❄️

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Winter in New York is movie magic: Rockefeller Center tree, ice skating, holiday markets, and Broadway at its best. Hotel prices drop in January–February after the holiday rush.

Travel Essentials

Tips and logistics to make your NYC trip smooth and stress-free.

🛂

Visa & Entry

Citizens of 42 Visa Waiver Program countries (including UK, EU, Japan, Australia) can enter for up to 90 days with an approved ESTA (apply online, $21 fee, valid 2 years). All others need a B-1/B-2 tourist visa from a US embassy. Passports must be machine-readable.

✈️

Getting There

Three major airports serve NYC. JFK (international hub, Queens — 45 min by AirTrain + subway) handles most long-haul routes. LaGuardia (LGA) is closest to Manhattan but has no rail link. Newark (EWR) in New Jersey is connected by NJ Transit. NYC is also served by Amtrak from Boston and Washington DC.

🚇

Getting Around

The NYC Subway runs 24/7 and covers all five boroughs — buy an OMNY card (contactless tap-to-pay) or use your phone/contactless card directly. A single ride is $2.90. Taxis and Uber/Lyft are abundant. Walking is often fastest in Midtown Manhattan.

🏨

Accommodation

Budget hostels from $50/night, midrange hotels $150–300, luxury properties $400–1,000+. Midtown Manhattan is central but pricier. Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO) offers great value with easy subway access. Avoid Penn Station and Times Square areas for better value.

🌮

Food & Drink

Iconic NYC eats: a $1.50 dollar slice of pizza, a Katz's pastrami sandwich ($25), bagel with lox and cream cheese, chicken over rice from a Halal cart, a Levain cookie, Chinatown soup dumplings. Restaurant bill: tip 18–20% (standard). Happy hours run 5–7 pm at most bars.

💡

Insider Tips

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge at sunrise before crowds arrive. Take the free Staten Island Ferry for harbour and Statue of Liberty views. Ride the 7 Train through Jackson Heights and Flushing for an international food tour. Most world-class museums suggest donations rather than charge fixed entry fees.
