Overview
Rome is the world's greatest open-air museum — a living city where you can eat a €2 gelato in the shadow of a 2,000-year-old aqueduct. Founded in 753 BC according to legend, Rome was the capital of the most powerful empire the western world has ever known, and every era of its extraordinary history is layered into the streets, piazzas, and monuments you pass every day.
The city's ancient core — the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill — draws millions of visitors each year and rightly so. But Rome rewards those who wander beyond the obvious: stumbling into a Renaissance courtyard, finding Caravaggio's canvases hanging unguarded in a dimly lit baroque church, or discovering that the best carbonara of your life costs €12 in a backstreet trattoria four blocks from the Pantheon.
Rome is also a city of pure pleasure — in food, coffee, fashion, and the particular Italian art of doing nothing stylishly. An espresso at the bar, a stroll along the Tiber at dusk, an evening passeggiata through the Campo de' Fiori: Rome teaches you to slow down, look up, and appreciate that history isn't a museum exhibit — it's the ground under your feet.

Two thousand years of history packed into one magnificent city.
The Flavian Amphitheatre — built between 70 and 80 AD — could hold 80,000 spectators and hosted gladiatorial combat, wild animal hunts, and even mock naval battles. Book skip-the-line tickets and combine with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill on a single ticket — you'll need 4-5 hours for all three sites.
The world's greatest art collection leads ultimately to the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo's ceiling — one of the supreme achievements of Western art. St. Peter's Basilica and its dome are a short walk away and free to enter. Book Vatican Museum tickets months ahead during peak season — queues without a reservation stretch for hours.
Nicola Salvi's theatrical baroque fountain (completed 1762) receives 3,000 coins a day from tourists following the legend that a thrown coin guarantees a return to Rome. Two minutes' walk from the crowds you'll find some of Rome's best gelaterias. The Pantheon — 2,000 years old and still the world's best-preserved Roman building — is a 10-minute walk away.

Perfect temperatures, wildflowers, and long evenings for outdoor dining. Easter week draws huge crowds — book months ahead. May and early June are the sweet spot between Easter crowds and summer heat.
Very hot and very crowded. Many Romans leave the city in August. Attractions are packed but hotels drop prices slightly mid-August. Visit major sites at opening or after 4pm to avoid the worst heat.
Warm, less crowded than summer, and Roman cuisine at its seasonal best — truffle, porcini mushrooms, and new-harvest olive oil. September is particularly outstanding value and weather.
Cool, occasionally rainy, but very few crowds at the major sites. Christmas in Rome is magical — nativity scenes (presepi) everywhere. Best hotel deals of the year, outside the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
Practical Info
EU citizens need only a national ID. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens get 90 days visa-free in the Schengen Zone. The new ETIAS electronic travel authorisation will apply from 2025 for visa-exempt nationalities — it's a simple online form for €7.
Fiumicino (FCO) is Rome's main international hub, 32km from the centre. A direct Leonardo Express train runs to Termini station every 30 minutes (€14, 32 min). The smaller Ciampino (CIA) handles many budget airlines; coaches connect it to Termini.
Rome's historic centre is best explored on foot. The Metro has only two main lines but covers the main tourist corridor. Buy a 48-hour or 72-hour integrated ticket covering metro, bus, and tram. Avoid taxis not from official white cab stands — use the itTaxi app instead.
Roman pasta canon: cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana, gricia. Never order these at tourist-trap restaurants near major sites. Stand at a bar for espresso (€1.20) rather than sitting (€3+). Pizza al taglio (by the slice) is the best €3 lunch in the world. Friday means filetti di baccalà (salt cod fritters).
Budget hostels from €25/night in Termini area. Good mid-range B&Bs €80–150 near Trastevere or Campo de' Fiori. Boutique hotels in the historic centre €150–350. Luxury options on the Via Veneto or near the Piazza Navona from €350+/night.
Always carry a small bottle of water — Rome has 2,500 nasoni (drinking fountains) across the city with cold, safe tap water. Modesty dress code enforced at Vatican and major basilicas (shoulders and knees covered). The Omnia Card bundles Vatican + Colosseum + transport and saves money for busy itineraries.
